Anesthesia drug is more than an injection: A myth of anesthesia safety
The ambulatory surgery is now expanding locally and it is increasingly common to have full-time anaesthesiologists in a day procedure centre. Our centre has three full-time anaesthesiologists to carry out preoperative assessment, patient monitoring during anaesthesia, and postoperative care. Anaesthesiologists are expected to provide safe and smooth anaesthesia services, and help prevent severe side effects.
Administering the anaesthesia is more than a drug injection, since it requires that the anaesthesiologist provides comprehensive medical care to patients before, during, and after surgery. The preoperative evaluation includes some medical tests, such as the medical history, X-rays, and blood tests. Certain patients are more likely to experience problems or complications and possibly even death than others because of their age, overweight problem, or respiratory diseases.
The anaesthesiologist monitors the patient’s health condition during the procedure, and titrates administration of anaesthetic medication accordingly. When there is a patient that requires resuscitation, the anaesthesiologist will make a change in dosage of anaesthesia and provide ventilation to patients with an abnormal respiratory system.
The anaesthesiologists can help the patient awaken safely and effectively manage pain from surgery. Patients will stay at the certified resuscitation area after the procedure where is equipped with all sorts of airway and intubation instruments including the endoscopic guided intubation facility, ventilator, oxygen generating machine, lifesaving medications and the cardioverter. Moreover, all our medical staff receives regular training on resuscitation to ensure patients can get the medical assistance in case of any emergency timely and properly.
Our centre holds two sessions of resuscitation of training and emergency drill every year. As of December 2021, 26 colleagues have obtained the certificate of Basic Life Support (BLS), 11 have got certified in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). We have full-time Anaesthesiologist and sufficient medical staff with internationally recognized certificate in resuscitation. Our centre has the capability to treat the emergency medical condition with efficiency and ensures patient safety a top priority.
As the caseloads of day surgery and endoscopy are increasing, we see a growing demand for anaesthesia services for both preoperative and postoperative stages. Over a decade, our centre has always committed to the “Patients come first” strategy which is to put patients in utmost care through providing the professional and ethical medical services.
